Back in the 40's and early 50's some wwomen opted to not wear a garter belt or girdle to hold theeir stockings up. Rather they chose to use roll garters to keep them up. That was OK until the elastic in the garters began to wear out, then their stockings would slip a little and have a baggy look. They would need to pull them up, sometimes repairing to the ladies room and sometimes simply pulling their skirt up and pull their stockings back up. My mother often wore roll garters to keep her stockings up.
